A year with Great Salt Lake

In December of 2023, I started a project to visit the lake weekly during the Vigil for Great Salt Lake in 2024. Afterwards, I decided to keep visiting the lake on a regular schedule. I aimed to go monthly, but some months I didn’t make it due to life conflicts.

During my Vigil project, the lake was my main focus; I wanted to photograph the water or the shore but not focus on the wildlife that depends on the Great Salt Lake for survival. After that project was (photographically) complete, I began photographing the shorebirds and other wildlife around the lake. Lying in the mud photographing shorebirds wasn’t something I ever imagined I would do when I was in music school, but I had no idea what fun it would be.

Watching the seasons change, trying to find new vantage points, seeing the different species come and go during their long migrations, witnessing the water level rise and then recede over the course of the year has been inspiring, educational, buggy, smelly, and I can’t wait to do it again.

I hope the new year finds you replenished with water in your lake.
